Son of the famous Commodore David Porter at age 10 he becomes a midshipman on his father’s ship, at Vera Cruz in the Mexican War. In April 1861, under orders from Lincoln, he sails USS Powhattan to attack Ft. Pickens to the dismay of the Ft. Sumter relief fleet. Later involved with the capture of New Orleans, Vicksburg and Ft. Fischer and Superintendent  of US Naval Academy. His step-brother was Admiral David Farragut.
